The Sand Stitch Variation creates an interesting look. My free pattern, Sweethearts, Variation Two uses this stitch. It is a two row repeat. Row 1) Knit all stitches Row 2) K1, p1, repeat across row. When working a different border pattern, it may be helpful to place a stitch marker after the first four stitches and in front of the last four stitches.
The Garter Stitch Border is the one I use the most often. This one is easy. Knit all the stitches, every row, inside the border brackets to create this border.
